Bhubaneswar: Several districts in coastal Odisha, including Bhubaneswar, has been experiencing incessant rain since Wednesday morning.

“Monsoon is returning to normalcy. Rainfall activity is likely to increase in Odisha from today,” regional centre of India Meteorological Department (IMD) here tweeted. Some places in Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Khurda, Puri and Ganjam are witnessing rain accompanied by thunderstorm and lighting, it added.

The southwest monsoon, which has remained subdued over the state, is most likely to become normal by July 6. Thunderstorm activities will also improve triggering heavy to very heavy rainfall at many places in Odisha. “The monsoon trough at mean sea level now passes through Ganganagar, Churu, Guna, Satna, Pendra Road, Sambalpur, Balasore and thence southeastwards to Central Bay of Bengal,” according to the morning bulletin.

In addition, a cyclonic circulation now lies over Westcentral Bay of Bengal & adjoining north Andhra Pradesh coast. Under its influence, rainfall has been recorded in southern Odisha districts including Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada and Gajapati. The state is likely to experience fairly widespread light/moderate rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy falls during next 5 days.

The MeT office had earlier forecast heavy rain at one or two places in Malkagiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj with light to moderate rain or thundershower at many places in Odisha on Wednesday (July 5).

The intensity of rain is likely to increase the following day (July 6) with heavy to very heavy rain at one or two places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal and Balangir and heavy rainfall at some places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Boudh and Nuapada. Light to moderate rain or thundershower is likely at most places in the remaining parts of the state, according to the midday bulletin.

On July 7, heavy rainfall may occur at one or two places in Nuapada, Balangir, Sonepur, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj and Balasore districts with thundershowers across the state.

The yellow warning for heavy rain continues on July 8 for Bargarh, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur.

Notably, the state witnessed 31% deficit rainfall in the first month of this monsoon season (June 1 to July 4). It recorded 171.7 mm rainfall against the normal average of 247.4 mm.
