‘Jahna Go Tume Jhurana’: Asha Bhosle & Her Tryst With Odia Film Music

Bhubaneswar: From hymns to hip-hop, legendary singer Asha Bhosle, who turned 89 on Thursday (September 8), has gifted us tracks for every occasion.

In a career spanning seven decades, she recorded over 11,000 songs in 20 different languages, including Odia.

It was in 1975 that the iconic singer recorded her first Odia song ‘Jhimi Jhimi Ta Maaja Dakile Na Chhadibu’ for the film Samaya under the direction of Bhuban-Hari. She also lent her voice to ‘Jahna Go Tume Jhurana’ from Arati in 1981. In 1992 move Maa, she sang ‘To Na Re Pindhili Sadhi’ with his husband R D Burman as the music director.

According to film historian Surya Deo, the legendary singer had also recorded a song for the movie Arundhati but it was never released.

Apart from there, she lent her voice to a Sambalpuri song for the movie Chinni, Odia bhajans and the state anthem, ‘Bade Utkal Janani’. She last recorded an Odia song with her granddaughter Zanai in 2017 under the direction of ace musician and singer Shankar Mahadevan.

The playback singer was conferred with the prestigious Akshaya Mohanty Samman in 2011 in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the field of music.
