‘Jai Shri Ram’ Row: MP Speaker Gifts Ramayana To Mamata Banerjee

Bhopal: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s refusal to speak at a tribute event for Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose in Kolkata over chants of “Jai Shri Ram” from a section of the crowd has become a flashpoint between the BJP and Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress.

A day after the controversy, Pro-tem Speaker of Madhya Pradesh Assembly Rameshwar Sharma on Sunday gifted a copy of the Ramayana to Mamata, appealing her to read it carefully. He sent the copy of Ramayana through courier to the Bengal CM.

Sharma alleged that the Bengal CM is opposing Ram’s name “under pressure from Bangladesh” and “due to her vote bank”.

“Everyone knows what is the current status and condition of those who opposed Lord Ram’s name in the past,” Sharma said while speaking to India Today TV.

“Did anyone have an empire bigger than Ravan? But he opposed Ram’s name and everyone knows what happened to him,” he added.

When asked why “Jai Shri Ram” slogans were chanted at a government function, he stated, “Who said that no one should take the name of Lord Ram at a government function? I’m also a Pro-tem Speaker sitting on a constitutional post, but I chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’ proudly.”

He also offered to recite Ramayana at Mamata’s residence for 20 days and suggested that listening to the name of Lord Ram would be beneficial to all.
