New Delhi: Five persons of Indian origin have been sentenced to between 2-3 years in prison and caning for their involvement in violence at a hotel in Singapore in 2023.
They have been identified as Sridharan Elangovan, Manojkumar Velayanatham, Sashikumar Parirsamy, Puthenvilla Keith Peter and Raja Rishi,
Asvain Pachan Pillai Sukumaran (30), another man of Indian origin, is facing murder charges for stabbing bouncer Mohammad Isrrat Mohd Ismail (29) during the ruckus. The matter is pending in court.
Elangovan (30), Velayanatham (32) and Parirsamy (34) were members of a secret society group. Isrrat and his friend Shahrulnizam Osman (30) were members of another secret society group, the Singapore Police have said.
On August 19, 2023, about 10 people, including these five, were drinking at Club Rumours at Concorde Hotel and Shopping Mall when Isrrat and Osman arrived. They planned to hand over invitation cards for Isrrat’s wedding to club staff after closing hours. The duo occupied a table near the entrance to the club.
Around 6 am, as the club was downing shutters, there was an altercation between the larger group and the two men. In the melee that followed, Issrat was stabbed and was declared dead at hospital. Apart from the five, six more men were named as co-accused.
On February 25, a court ordered Elangovan to spend 36 months in jail and receive six strokes of the cane, while Velayanatham was sentenced for 30 months. He will be caned four times. Pakirsamy will spend two years in jail and receive two strokes of the cane, while Peter has been sentenced to 26 months behind the bars. He will be caned thrice. Rishi will spend 30 months in jail and receive four strokes of the cane.
