New Delhi: The makers of Rajinikanth-starrer ‘Jailer’ and ‘Coolie’ have reportedly sued IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for using film content without authorisation in a promotional video.
Sun TV Network has approached Madras High Court with a copyright infringement case after CSK allegedly used background scores and dialogues from ‘Jailer’, ‘Jailer 2’ and ‘Coolie’ in a video unveiling the team’s new jersey ahead of IPL 2026, which kicks off on March 28.
The promotional clip, which was shared on CSK’s social media handles, quickly caught the attention of fans who identified the references to the popular Tamil films.
The production house alleged that the material was used without prior permission and slapped a copyright violation notice against the team.
Following the notice, CSK removed the original clip and uploaded an edited version with different background music.
During the hearing on March 13, senior counsel J Ravindran, appearing for Sun TV Network, informed the court that the IPL team had already stopped using the disputed content.
“CSK Limited had stopped using the copyright materials after the plaintiff had sent a mail to it on March 1, 2026 highlighting their unauthorised use,” Ravindran was quoted as saying by The Hindu.
Sun TV Network’s legal team argued that similar incidents should not occur in the future and urged the court to direct CSK to refrain from using copyrighted material without prior permission.
The high court will continue to hear arguments before deciding whether any further directions or penalties are required.
