Tokyo: Coronavirus cases have been rising in Japan, leading to concern and uncertainty over the Tokyo Olympics later this year. But Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said that he is determined to hold the postponed Olympic Games from July 23 to August 8 as a symbol of human victory over the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We are holding the Olympics and Paralympics this summer. I am determined to achieve the Games as a proof of human victory against the pandemic, a symbol of global solidarity and to give hope and courage around the world,” Suga said while speaking at a virtual World Economic Forum meeting.
International Olympic Committee officials have repeatedly said the Games will be held in July as planned, after a one-year postponement, though the events could be held without spectators.
Repeating his resolve to achieve a “safe and secure” Olympics, the Japanese Prime Minister pledged to get infections under control in Japan as soon as possible.
