Bhubaneswar: Jharsuguda recorded its third coldest night in December in 15 years as mercury plummeted to 6.2°C, which was 5.1°C below normal, on Tuesday morning.
The western Odisha had recorded 6.5°C, the previous day; 5.6°C on December 7, 2021, and 5.8°C on December 3, 2019, and Dec 8 2020, and 6.4°C on December 29, 2014.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a cold wave warning for Jharsuguda and Angul, which recorded 9°C, a drop of 3.7°C from normal. However, the rest of Odisha experienced a slight rise in the night temperature during the last 24 hours. G Udayagiri in Kandhamal continued to be the coldest place in the state at 4.3°C, followed by Phulbani at 6°C and Daringbadi and Semiliguda in Koraput at 7°C each, Koraput at 7.1°C, Kirei in Sundargarh at 8.2°C, Rourkela at 8.5°C, Sundargarh and Nabarangpur at 8.8°C each, Chiplima in Sambalpur at 9.8°C.
The twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack recorded 14°C and 11.4°C respectively.
The IMD has forecast a gradual rise in the minimum temperature across Odisha by 2-3°C during the five days.
According to data received from satellites, some areas in Cuttack, Khurda, Puri, Nayagarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, and Deogarh districts experienced dense to very dense fog this morning. Visibility in Rourkela was reduced to 50 metre at 7 am with a thick blanket of fog engulfing the city.
The weather has warned of dense to very dense fog at isolated pockets in districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, Dhenkanal, Sundargarh and Mayurbhanj during early hours of December 31. Similar warning has been issued for Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, Sundargarh and Mayurbhanj till January 1 morning, and Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Kandhamal and Sundargarh during the subsequent 24 hours.
Dense fog may occur in Jagatsinghpur district and Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapada during early morning hours of January 3 and January 4, respectively, it added.
