JNU Student Union Polls Mired In Dispute

New Delhi: The student union elections in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) have got mired in a dispute with the Delhi High Court ordering a stay on the declaration of results.

The order to JNU to not notify the poll results was passed by Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva on September 6.  The matter will again come up for hearing on September 17, according to a report by NDTV.

The HC directive followed pleas by two students, who alleged that their poll nominations were rejected illegally. Both had applied for contesting for the post of councillor, the report said.

JNU’s counsel in the HC, Monica, said, “The petitioners have stated that the Lyngdoh committee recommendations were not followed. The election committee in JNU has dismissed the petitioners’ candidatures in a single line order without citing reasons.”

She added, “Rules must be followed. These are for the orderly conduct of elections of any kind. So, if the HC finds out that the rules have not been followed, it can declare the results void and can order re-elections or fresh counting.”
