New Delhi: President Ram Nath Kovind has appointed Justice NV Ramana as the next Chief Justice of India (CJI).
The current CJI, Justice SA Bobde, is due to retire on April 23.
Justice Ramana will take charge as the 48th CJI. He is due to retire on August 26, 2022.

Justice Ramana, who hails from the Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh, enrolled as an Advocate on February 10, 1983, and started practice in the High Court of Andhra Pradesh.
He was a panel counsel for various government organisations and as Additional Standing Counsel for Railways in the Central Administrative Tribunal at Hyderabad before rendering services as Additional Advocate General of Andhra Pradesh. He was appointed as a Permanent Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court on June 27, 2000, and functioned as acting Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court from March 10, 2013, to May 20, 2013.
He specialised in constitutional, civil, labour, service and election matters. He has also practised before inter-state river tribunals.
Justice Ramana was elevated as the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court on September 2, 2013, and later as a Judge of the Supreme Court on February 17, 2014.
He is the senior-most judge of the apex court.
