New Delhi: Filmmaker Leena Manimekalai and others have been summoned by a Delhi court on August 6 in a case seeking to restrain her from depicting goddess Kali as smoking a cigarette.
The petitioner contended that Manimekalai depicted the Hindu goddess in a very ‘uncalled for’ manner as shown in the documentary film’s poster and promotional video.
The plaintiff has filed the suit for permanent and mandatory injunction against Manimekalai and others.
Making the point that the film’s poster hurts religious sentiments, the plaintiff said it is against basic principles of morality and decency.
The matter has been listed for further hearing on August 6.
Several FIRs have been filed across the country against Manimekalai, after she shared the poster on social media.
There have been demands to arrest Manimekalai, who defended herself by saying that the documentary was about a woman strolling in the streets of Canada’s Toronto.
Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra stoked the controversy further by saying that Kaali is a “meat-eating, alcohol-accepting goddess.”
A number of FIRs have been filed against her also.
