Bhubaneswar: One of the key accused in the murder of K Armstrong, the Bahujan Samaj Party’s (BSP) leader in Tamil Nadu, was killed in an encounter on Saturday night, media reports claimed.
A history-sheeter, Thiruvengadam, was killed in the police encounter near Madhavaram in Chennai. The reports claimed that Thiruvengadam had followed Armstrong for several days, ahead of the murder.
Armstrong, a strong Dalit voice in the southern state, was hacked by unidentified bike-borne miscreants near his residence. According to a previous NDTV report, police had formed ten special teams under Additional Commissioner of Police, Asra Garg, to probe into the incident.
According to an India Today report, at least 11 suspects had been arrested in connection with the case so far. The murder had triggered a loud political outcry in the state. Opposition parties had alleged the breakdown of law and order system in the state, pointing fingers at the MK Stalin-led Tamil Nadu government.
Earlier, the BSP supremo Mayawati had demanded a CBI probe into the murder. The leader had claimed that those arrested in the case were not the real culprits
