‘Killer Bacteria’: One More Elephant Dies In Odisha Sancturay, Toll Mounts To Six

Bhawanipatna: One more elephant was found dead in Karlapat wildlife sanctuary in Kalahandi district on Sunday, taking the toll to six so far.

A female elephant was found at the same place where four carcasses were found earlier, the Regional Chief Conservator of Forest (RCCF), Sudipta Dash, informed.

Dash said the carcass has been sent for post-mortem.

The post-mortem of the elephants who died earlier has revealed that the deaths were due to haemorrhagic septicaemia.

The first death of a pregnant elephant in the sanctuary took place near Tentulipadar village on February 1 while four more elephants died on February 8, 10, 12 and 13.

To ascertain the cause of the death, a team from the Centre for Wildlife Health of Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology, OUAT, led by Prof Niranjan Sahu is presently camping inside the sanctuary.

Earlier, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, Sashi Paul, had told the media that the jumbos could have died due to some bacterial infection. The water bodies in the sanctuary could have been infected, he added
