Dhaka: A team of experts from the United Nations (UN) will visit Bangladesh next week to investigate the killings of hundreds of protesters before and after Sheikh Hasina’s resignation as prime minister last week.

UN Human Rights chief Volker Turk informed Bangladesh interim government’s Chief Adviser Prof. Muhammad Yunus about the decision.

According to the UN, this is the first time the UN is sending a fact-finding mission to Bangladesh since its independence in 1971 to investigate widespread human rights abuses in the country, a post from the X handle of Chief Adviser of the Government of Bangladesh said.

Yunus took oath as Chief Adviser on August 8, hours after returning to Dhaka from Paris where he had gone for medical treatment.

Amid renewed protests over quota reforms for government jobs, Hasina fled to India on August 5.

A complaint was filed with the investigation agency of Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal against Hasina and eight others, accusing them of committing genocide and crimes against humanity during the mass movement of the students against her government.
