Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), Dhenkanal

Top mass communication college in India, Indian Institute of Mass Communication has a regional campus in Dhenkanal district of Odisha. Situated in the arms of nature, the campus is now 28 years old. It offers postgraduate diploma course in English and Odia journalism.

It has studios — both for TV and Radio — open gym facility, computer lab apart from other necessary facilities. Moreover, it vigorously prepares students to face the world outside. In the nine-month course, the session is full of academic and non-academic activities. It is known for its 100 per cent placement track record. For the academic session, 2019-2020, the students of Odia journalism had 100 per cent placements. Alumni of this college are working in reputed media organisations like Times of India, The New Indian Express, Inshorts, Business Standard, Doordarshan and many more.

Naxatra Institute of Media Studies, (NIMS) Bhubaneswar

Established in 2009, the institute offers two courses, bachelor’s and master’s in journalism and mass communication. The college is affiliated to Utkal University. For placements, NIMS maintains close contact and professional relationship with a large number of news organisations, academic institutions and corporations. It also employs students for its own news television channel and newspaper. It runs its placement process throughout the year alongside academics.

Institute of Media Studies (IMS), Bhubaneswar

The IMS offers a master degree in mass communication and journalism. The course fee is Rs 54,000 on a yearly basis. It also follows a choice based credit system examination pattern. Admissions for the current academic session is underway. Shortlisting of candidates is done on the basis of a written exam, followed by group discussion, personal interview and overall performance score. It also provides boys and girls hostel facilities among several other facilities.

Sambad School of Mass Communication (SSoMaC)

Established in 2006, SSoMaC is a unit of Sambad-Ama Odisha Charitable Trust and is approved by the government of Odisha. SSoMaC emphasis on the craft of journalism and the curriculum is designed as such that helps students to supplement their basic education. Study tours, library facilities, non-academic activities are in additions to the well-equipped infrastructure of the college.

It offers 100 per cent placements and every year SSoMaC organises placements in which media house Sambad, shortlists students for its numerous outlets. However, students also have the opportunity to opt-out to work in other media houses too. Thus, students have sure chances of getting placed on completion of courses.

Ravenshaw University, Cuttack

Established in 2006, Ravenshaw University offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Journalism and Mass Communication. The average fee for a masters degree in journalism and mass communication is around Rs 60,000 per annum. However, it also provides scholarships to students. The average salary offered to a journalism student from Ravenshaw University is somewhere around Rs 4.31 lakh per annum. One can get admissions here as the process is underway for 2020-21 academic session.

Utkal University

Utkal University is a prestigious educational institution in the state. Established in 1943, the university offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in journalism and mass communication. It has been accredited NAAC grade A+. It is comparatively cheaper to study at Utkal University as the cost of the course ranges between 25,000 and 30,000.

Berhampur University

It is the only university in Odisha that offers a regular and honours course in journalism and mass communication. It follows a choice-based credit system. An internship is mandatory for students in their sixth semester, which opens them to professional journalistic practices. The university also provides several facilities and student cells that listen to the grievances of the students.

Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), Bhubaneswar

School of Mass Communication (SMC) at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), Deemed To Be University, nurtures talents in the field of journalism and communication. It offers bachelors degree (3 years), a masters degree (2 years) and a dual degree (5 years) in communications and journalism.
