Cuttack: Dreaded gangster from Kendrapada district, Sheikh Hyder who escaped from the Surgery Ward of the SCB Medical College and Hospital here on Saturday evening has several cases pending against him at different police stations in Odisha.
While the Kendrapada Town Police have registered seven cases, a number of cases like murder, attempt to murder, extortion and tender-fixing are also pending in the Sea Beach Police Station in Puri, several police stations in Bhubaneswar and other districts.
Although the gangster has managed to secure bail in most cases, the Additional District Judge court in Bhubaneswar had sentenced him and his seven associates to life imprisonment for the sensational broad daylight murder of Sheikh Chuna alias Malik Hanan, brother of gangster Sheikh Suleiman near Stewart School in the Delta Square area in Bhubaneswar on May 31, 2005.
Although Hyder managed parole from the court in 2014, police arrested him and forwarded him to the court for his complicity in the kidnap and murder of the mine owner Rashmi Ranjan Mohapatra. He was later lodged in the Jharpada Special Jail after the court awarded the life sentence to him in 2015.
However, the gangster was later shifted to the district jail in Sambalpur on May 2, 2017, following reports of a gang war with his rival Dhalasamanta brothers.
