Know Why ₹ 2,000 Notes Are Unavailable In Banks, ATMs

New Delhi: The finance ministry said on Monday that ₹ 2,000 notes have not been printed in the last two years. The response came following a question in the Parliament on why currency notes introduced post-demonetisation in 2016 were hardly in circulation.

Minister of State for Finance, Anurag Thakur said in the Lok Sabha that the 2000-rupee notes were not sent to the printing press in 2019-20 and 2020-21.

MDMK Parliamentarian A Ganeshamurthi raised the question whether the government was aware of the fact that the circulation of ₹ 2,000 currency notes was “very low” and that it was unavailable even in banks and ATMs.

“The printing of banknotes of particular denomination is decided by the government in consultation with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to maintain desired denomination mix for facilitating transactional demand of public,” Anurag Thakur was quoted as saying in the Lok Sabha by NDTV.
