Jalandhar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Dera Sachkhand Ballan near Jalandhar on February 1, marking the 649th birth anniversary of 15th-century Bhakti saint Guru Ravidas — a significant occasion for Punjab’s Ravidassia and Dalit communities, according to reports. The visit comes with heightened security and political attention as parties prepare for the state’s assembly elections next year.
The invitation for the visit was extended to the PM last year by the head of Dera Sachkhand Ballan, reports claim. This underscores a cultural and religious significance.
Reaching out to Dalit voters in Punjab?
The visit is widely seen as a political outreach by the BJP toward Dalit voters in Punjab. The Doaba region has a Dalit population of nearly 45%, higher than the state’s already largest share of 32%, and accounts for 23 of Punjab’s 117 assembly seats. The dera at Ballan is believed to influence at least 19 of these constituencies.
This engagement follows the recent Padma Shri award given by the Centre to Sant Niranjan Dass just before Republic Day, adding to the political undertone of the visit, reported Hindustan Times.
Political analysts say the BJP aims to strengthen its electoral footprint in Punjab — where it has historically been a junior partner or outside the dominant regional equations — by courting Ravidassia and Dalit voters ahead of the 2027 assembly polls.
Experts also caution that Dalit voters in Punjab are not a political monolith, and their voting choices can vary significantly across local issues and party alignments.
Local community & identity dimensions
For the Ravidassia community, the visit holds symbolic importance beyond politics. The community, which comprises a notable portion of Punjab’s Scheduled Caste population, has asserted a separate religious identity and creation of their own sacred text and distinct practices. This visit by the nation’s leader is being interpreted by some supporters as recognition of that identity and respect for the community’s spiritual heritage.
