Kolkata Doc’s Rape & Murder: Nirbhaya’s Mother Demands Mamata Banerjee’s Resignation

Kolkata: Amid growing calls for the head of Mamata Banerjee, there was one voice which stood out on Saturday.

Asha Devi, the mother of 2012 Delhi gangrape case victim Nirbhaya, demanded the West Bengal Chief Minister’s resignation over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Asha Devi said that Mamata has failed to handle the situation and, instead of using her power to take action against the culprits, she is trying to mislead the public and divert people’s attention by holding protests.

“Mamata Banerjee is protesting to divert people’s attention from this issue. She herself is a woman. She should have taken strict action against the culprits while discharging her responsibility as the head of the state. She should resign because she has failed to handle the situation,” Nirbhaya’s mother stated.

Mamata also happens to be the state’s Home minister and Health minister.

On Friday, Mamata led a protest rally in Kolkata and demanded justice for the junior doctor and also capital punishment for the culprits.

The body of the 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor was found in a semi-naked state while on duty at the state-run hospital on August 9.

Asha Devi’s Message Central & State Govts

In a strong message, Asha Devi said until Central and state governments get serious about seeking swift punishment from the court for rapists, such heinous crimes will continue to take place in the country daily.

“When girls are not safe in Kolkata’s medical college and such barbarity is committed against them, then one can understand the state of women’s safety in the country,” she said.

The Nirbhaya case shook up the nation when a 22-year-old physiotherapy intern was beaten, gangraped and tortured in a private bus in which she was travelling with her male friend on December 16, 2012.

Rushed to Safdarjung Hospital for treatment, Nirbhaya was flown to Singapore 11 days after the assault, but succumbed to her injuries two days later.
