New Delhi: The two-member inquiry committee, formed by the National Commission for Women (NCW), has submitted its preliminary report in the rape and murder of postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata’s state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, highlighting lapses in security, infrastructure, investigation and tampering of evidence.

“The site where the deceased was allegedly raped and murdered is undergoing sudden renovations, potentially leading to tampering with the evidence. The crime scene should have been immediately sealed by the police,” the report states.

The report highlights that there are inadequate security arrangements on the hospital campus for the on-call duty interns, nurses and doctors during the night shift. It also claimed that there was no security guard during the incident.

Urging for a thorough investigation into the case, the report states that the questioning of the former principal of the medical college—who had resigned after the incident—remains incomplete. It further highlights poor infrastructure for female staffers, in terms of restrooms and inadequate lighting.

After taking a suo-moto cognizance of the brutal incident, NCW had formed the two-member team comprising NCW member Delhina Khondgup and advocate Soma Chaudary.

Doctors’ cease-work today across India

The Indian Medical Association has declared a 24-hour withdrawal of services by all the modern medicine doctors of the country irrespective of the sector and place of work. Emergencies and casualties will function. No OPDs or elective surgeries will be done. The withdrawal commenced at 6am on Saturday at various hospitals across the country.

“We are facing difficulties. But because of the incident that happened, there will be difficulties. What needs to be done, has to be done… The doctors will not leave their strike until there is a solution… There are fewer doctors but the services are running smoothly…” relative of a patient at Sion Hospital told ANI.
