New Delhi: Sanjay Roy, the accused in the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor consumed alcohol before the crime took place and also watched violent pornographic videos, according to police.
At around 11 pm on the day the crime took place, Sanjay went to a place behind the hospital to drink alcohol and watched porn, India Today reported.
“During the examination, police found several violent pornographic videos from Sanjay Roy’s mobile phone. His mobile was almost full with violent porn videos which indicate that either he was a mentally ill person or a pervert person,” the report quoted sources as saying.
Police sources also said that Roy entered the hospital premises several times that night.
The body of a 31-year-old woman postgraduate trainee doctor, who was raped and murdered inside the government-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, was found in the seminar room on Friday morning. The autopsy report indicated that the victim was also bleeding from her private parts. She also had injuries in her belly, left leg, neck, in her right hand, ring finger and lips.
The Department of Chest Medicine, where the assault took place, has two entry points. On the night of the crime, one of these entrances was closed, leaving the back door open.
Although CCTV footage captured five to six people entering the department through this back entrance at around 4 am, police confirmed that these individuals had legitimate reasons for their presence, as they were attending to relatives admitted to the hospital.
Roy, however, had no such reason to be in the department that night. Investigators have described him as having a “perverted mind”, pointing out that the type of pornographic material he consumed was not of the sort “people usually watch”.
Roy attempted to destroy the evidence after committing the crime. Police have found indications that he tried to wash away bloodstains from the scene. The CCTV footage also shows Roy leaving the seminar room at around 4:45 am. After the crime, Roy made his way to the barracks of the 4th Battalion, where he fell asleep. He was arrested in the same location and was still intoxicated.
Roy, who has been sent to police custody till August 23, has been charged under Sections 64 (rape) and 103 (murder) of BNS.
Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday launched a scathing attack on West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee over the incident. BJP’s IT cell head, Amit Malviya, accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government of attempting to cover up the crime and called for an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
