Kolkata Gets New Police Commissioner A Day After Mamata Accepts Junior Docs’ Demands

Kolkata: The West Bengal government on Tuesday appointed Manoj Kumar Verma as the new Police Commissioner of Kolkata.

The 1998-batch IPS office succeeds Vineet Kumar Goyal, who was criticised for his handling of the rape and murder of 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. He has been reassigned as ADG and IGP of the Special Task Force in West Bengal.

Prior to this, Verma was serving as ADG (law and order).

This comes a day after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced removal of Goyal, director of health services and director of medical education while ceding to most of the demands put forward by the agitating doctors. “Given the demand of junior doctors, Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal has said in the meeting that he is ready to resign,” she told reporters late on Monday.

The medics, however, said that they will continue their ‘cease work’ protest on Tuesday and wait for the Supreme Court hearing on the case.
