New Delhi: The Lakhimpur Kheri violence in UP, which left people dead on Sunday during a farmers’ protest, has reached the Supreme Court.

The apex court has taken suo motu cognizance on the matter, based on a letter written by two advocates urging Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana to treat it as public interest litigation (PIL) so that guilty could be “brought to justice”.

According to an NDTV report, a three-judge bench headed by CJI Ramana will hear the matter on Thursday. The others on the bench are Justice Surya Kant and Justice Hima Kohli.

Advocates Shiv Kumar Tripathi and CS Panda had sought direction from Supreme Court seeking a high-level judicial inquiry under the supervision of this court, involving CBI, within a stipulated time.

They further stated that considering the seriousness of killing of farmers, it is incumbent upon the apex court to intervene in the matter.

Besides four farmers, BJP workers and a journalist were allegedly killed in the violence on Sunday.
