Bhubaneswar: Train services were disrupted on Rayagada-Visakhapatnam section as large boulders and mud damaged railway tracks following a landslide, triggered by heavy rain, on Thursday.
According to sources, the landslide occurred near Goddess Majhighariani temple in Odisha’s Rayagada district, leading to a breach in the rail tracks. Rayagada Divisional Railway Manager Amitabh Singhal along with other senior railway officials are at the site, supervising the repair of the damaged tracks.
In Koraput, large boulders obstructed the railway line between Dumuriput and Damanjodi. A tree got uprooted and fell onto high-voltage electric wires between Tyda and Chimidipalli on the Visakhapatnam-Koraput rail section, further impacting rail operations.
Similarly, train services on Rayagada and Koraput route have also been affected with tracks submerged in rainwater at Liliguma and Bhalumaska. Howrah-Jagdalpur Samaleswari Express was halted at Kothaguda due to severe waterlogging on the tracks. Rourkela Intercity was also reported to have been delayed.
According to Waltair Division sources, Visakhapatnam-Kirandul Night express leaving Visakhapatnam on 02.10.2025 has been cancelled, while Kirandul- Visakhapatnam Night Express leaving Kirandul on 02.10.2025 will be short-terminated at Koraput.
Notably, the Deep Depression over the Bay of Bengal has triggered very heavy rain in Odisha. The IMD has issued a red warning for the districts of Puri, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Ganjam, Kalahandi, and Kandhamal. Scattered heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy falls and thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph may occur in these districts till Friday morning.
Accumulated rainfall recorded in the last 24 hours, ending 5.30 pm, is as follows: Parlekhemundi (Gajapati) 101 mm, Koraput (Koraput) 63.6 mm, Daringbadi (Kandhamal) 46.0 mm, Nabarangpur (Nabarangpur) 42.2 mm.
