New Delhi: Fugitive businessman Mehul Choksi, who was captured in Dominica on Wednesday, can’t be moved out of Dominica until further orders. The court said this while hearing a petition from the Indian-born businessman.
Choksi is wanted by the CBI and the ED in India in Rs 13,500 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case. The fugitive businessman had gone missing from Antigua and Barbuda on Sunday only to be captured in Dominica on Wednesday.
“Upon filing of habeas corpus petition titled Mehul Choksi versus Attorney general of Commonwealth of Dominica and chief of police, Dominica court has ordered a restraint on removing Choksi from the land of Dominica until further order,” Choksi’s lawyer Vijay Agarwal was quoted as saying by news agency IANS.
According to Agarwal, the Dominica court has also allowed legal assistance and access to lawyers to Choksi. He said that the matter will again come up for hearing in Dominica on Friday morning.
Agarwal said on Thursday night that the businessman was forced into a vessel from Antigua and was taken to Dominica.
“Choksi has narrated his horrifying experience which is an eye-opener and vindicates my stand that he would not have gone from Antigua voluntarily. Choksi has said that he was forced to get into a vessel from Jolly Harbor in Antigua and he was taken to Dominica,” Choksi’s lawyer said.
