Los Angeles: Hollywood star and Academy Award-winner Lionardo DiCaprio has revealed something about his personal life that has created a stir in social media, particularly among Indians.
The Titanic star, while reflecting on his upbringing, said: “My stepmother is a Sikh. My father is from the sort of hippie counterculture and grew up in San Fran in Los Angeles. He hung out with a lot of the underground art movement in the Los Angeles of the 70s.”
The comment, made without fanfare, quickly caught attention once clips and excerpts began circulating on social media, as reported by News18.
Reports claim that DiCaprio’s stepmother, Peggy DiCaprio, is an Amritdhari Sikh. She is often seen wearing a turban and traditional Indian attire and is said to have embraced Sikhism years ago, later adopting the turban as part of her faith.
Peggy married George DiCaprio in 1995, becoming Leonardo’s stepmother and the mother of his stepbrother, Adam Ferrar. Leonardo’s biological parents – George DiCaprio and Irmelin Indenbirken – separated when the actor was just a year old, but both remained actively involved in his upbringing. Over the years, DiCaprio has often spoken about the strong influence his parents had on his worldview.
Indian social media platforms were flooded with reactions ranging from amused disbelief to heartfelt pride. One user wrote, “This just made me love him more! He was obviously raised by some good people.” Another joked, “That makes him half Indian now, welcome to the club bro.”
“Leonardo DiCaprio’s stepmom being a Sikh is a random fact I love lol,” another user wrote.
A Sikh user wrote: “I’m a Sikh – no turban for me though – and it’s wild that one of the most famous actors on the planet is connected somehow to a religion that is not as widely followed as others.”
