Bhubaneswar: With Cyclone Ditwah expected to run parallel to North Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts during the next 24 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday forecast cloudy sky with possibility of light rain/drizzle at one of two places in Odisha’s Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur and Kandhamal districts.
Ditwah over the southwest Bay of Bengal moved northwards at seven kmph, posing a severe threat to northern Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts. The system was about 90 km east-northeast of Karaikal (India), 120 km northeast of Vedaranniyam (India), 130 km southeast of Puducherry (India), 170 km north-northeast of Jaffna (Sri Lanka) and 220 km southsoutheast of Chennai (India) at 5.30 am.
According to the latest update from the IMD, Cyclone Ditwah is not expected to make impact but move parallel to the Indian coast. “While moving northwards the cyclonic storm will be centered over southwest Bay of Bengal within a minimum distance of 70 km and 30 km from the Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coastline by noon and evening of today, November 30 respectively,” it said.
Under the influence of the cyclonic storm, heavy rainfall may occur over Tamil Nadu during November 30-December 1; Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam & Rayalaseema during November 30-December 2; over Telangana on December 1; with isolated extremely heavy falls over coastal Tamil Nadu on November 30; with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall likely over Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam and Rayalaseema during November 30, it aded.
The name ‘Ditwah’ was suggested by Yemen and refers to a lagoon.
