The 56-year-old, who had driven to the market to buy vegetables, was stopped and questioned by police personnel.
The Tamil Nadu government has enforced strict lockdown in Chennai and three adjoining districts from June 19 to 30 to check further spread of COVID-19.
According to the rules, citizens can move within just 2 km of their residence to buy essential items and are barred from using their vehicles.
Robin, who played a solitary Test match and 136 ODIs for India, had to pay a fine of Rs 500 and his car was taken to the Shastri Nagar police station, according to sources.
A right-arm medium pacer and left-handed batsman, Robin was fielding coach of Team India as well as IPL outfit Mumbai Indians.
