New Delhi: In a major blow to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), seven MLAs resigned from the party’s primary membership on Friday, just five days before the Delhi Assembly election.

Of the seven sitting MLAs, six were ‘dropped’ by the party this time, with new candidates being fielded from those seats.

The main grievance of most of these MLAs are that they have lost faith in Arvind Kejriwal.

The sulking MLAs who quit AAP are — Bhawna Gaur (Palam), Rohit Mehraulia (Trilokpuri), Rajesh Rishi (Janakpuri), Madan Lal (Kasturba Nagar), Naresh Yadav (Mehrauli), Pawan Sharma (Adarsh Nagar) and BS Joon (Bijwasan).

Bhawna informed about her decision in a letter to AAP’s national convenor Kejriwal, stating that she was quitting because she had lost faith in the former chief minister him and the party.

Madan echoed her.

“I hereby resign from the primary membership of Aam Aadmi Party as I have lost faith in you and the party. Please accept the same,” Bhawna and Madan wrote in separate letters.

Mehrauli MLA Naresh was given a ticket for the 2025 election, but he returned it after allegations against him were proved in the Punjab Quran sacrilege case.

The party replaced Naresh with Mahender Chaudhary.

AAP, eyeing a third consecutive term in Delhi, is going it alone and has fielded candidates in all 70 Assembly seats of Delhi.

Polling will be held on February 5, with the counting of votes on February 8.
