Bhubaneswar: With a low-pressure area set to form over the Bay of Bengal, the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) of Odisha on Tuesday directed Collectors of all districts to remain prepared to deal with heavy rain and thunderstorm that may be triggered by the system.
In a message to the Collectors, the SRC asked them to submit a report on the damage, if occurred due to thunderstorm, whirlwind, hailstorm, lightning and rainfall immediately for information of the government.
Districts under orange and yellow warning should keep administrative machinery ready to face any eventuality, while people may be advised to keep watch on weather and take safe shelter during the thunderstorm activity to protect from lightning. Advice for fishermen is to be strictly implemented, the SRC said.
As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), an upper air cyclonic circulation extending up to mid-tropospheric levels lay over Northwest and adjoining Westcentral Bay of Bengal at 5.30 am on Tuesday. “Under its influence, a low pressure is likely to form over the same area today. It is likely become more marked,” It said.
The weather system is likely to intensify over the next 48 hours, bringing heavy rain in various parts of Odisha. The development and intensification of this weather system, combined with an active trough line, are expected to create favourable conditions for the southwest monsoon to advance into Odisha. Under its impact, several Odisha districts will likely experience heavy downpours till May 30, the weather agency said.
The IMD has also warned of squally weather with gusty surface wind speed, exceeding 45 kmph , over central bay and adjoining North bay of Bengal from May 29 to June 1 and along and off Odisha coast from May 29 to June 1.
Sea conditions are likely to be moderate to rough. Fishermen have advised not to venture into the deep sea and along and off Odisha coast from May 29 to June 1.
