Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday issued heavy to very heavy rainfall warning for Odisha with well-marked low-pressure area likely form over the north Bay of Bengal in the next 24 hours.

“Under the influence of a cyclonic circulation over the Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining north Bay of Bengal and Bangladesh, a low-pressure area has formed over north Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas of Bangladesh and West Bengal. The system is likely to become more marked during the next 24 hours,” said the IMD in a morning bulletin.

Due to the formation of the low pressure, IMD has issued red, orange and yellow warning for the following districts for two days.

August 7
(Red warning)

Extremely heavy rainfall is likely to occur at one or two places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada and Kalahandi districts.

Red: Take action. Extremely bad weather is expected. Red means people in the areas concerned should take action now to keep themselves and others safe from the impact of the weather.

(Orange warning)
Heavy to very heavy rainfall very likely to occur at one or two places in Gajapati, Ganjam, Nayagarh, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Nabarangpur, Balangir, Angul, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Jagatsinghpur, Sundargarh and Keonjhar.

Orange: Be prepared. There is an increased likelihood of severely or extremely bad weather affecting people in the area concerned, which could potentially disrupt people’s plans and possibly cause travel delays, road and rail closures, interruption to power and the potential risk to life and property.

August 8
(Orange warning)
Heavy to very heavy rainfall very likely to occur at one or two places in Koraput, Nawarangpur, Kalahandi, Rayagada and Kandhamal districts.

(Yellow warning)
Heavy rainfall very likely to occur at one or two places in Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Nayagarh, Khurda, Cuttack, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Angul, Dhenkanal, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Sundargarh, Sonepur, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Boudh, Bargarh, Nuapada, Kendrapada and Puri.

Yellow: Be aware. Severely bad weather is possible over the next few days and could affect people in the area concerned. Yellow means that you should plan ahead thinking about possible travel delays, or the disruption of your day-to-day activities.

The fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea along and off the Odisha coast, the north-west Bay of Bengal and west-central Bay of Bengal for two days till August 8 as the squally weather with wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph with gusting up to 60 kmph could make the conditions rough to very rough.
