Low Pressure-Triggered Rain May Dampen Durga Puja Spirit In Odisha; Check Forecast

Bhubaneswar: Rains may dampen the spirit of upcoming Durga Puja festivities in Odisha as a low-pressure area (LOPAR) is likely to form over the north-west Bay of Bengal on October 2 caused by remnants of typhoon Noru in the South China Sea.

According to SOA’s Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC) here, remnants of the typhoon could help form an upper air cyclonic circulation in the east-central Bay of Bengal near the Myanmar coast which would move in a north-westerly direction subsequently.

After the LOPAR is formed below the Bangladesh coast, the system would move in a west-north-westerly direction towards north Odisha coast on October 3 and advance towards western Odisha the next day.

Under its influence, widespread rainfall may occur over Odisha with the districts of Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Cuttack, Kendrapada, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal and Angul likely to experience heavy downpour on October 2 with heavy to very heavy rainfall at one or two places along coastal Odisha.

The districts of Khurda, Cuttack, Jajpur, Nayagarh, Dhenkanal, Angul, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Balangir, Sonepur, Boudh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Bargarh, Keonjhar and Sundargarh could receive heavy rainfall on October 3.

Light to moderate precipitation is likely across Odisha from October 4 to 6 while sporadic rain could continue till October 1. Models, however, don’t indicate further intensification of the system, it added.

Notably, the ‘North Indian Ocean Extended Range Outlook for Cyclogenesis’ issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted formation of a cyclonic circulation over the north Bay of Bengal during the middle of week 1 (September 23 to 29) and another over the central Bay of Bengal during the middle of week 2 (September 30 to October 6). However, rainfall activity might not be very strong with the process for withdrawal of the southwest monsoon beginning around October 10.

The Met Office has warned of heavy rain in a few districts of Odisha on September 28 and 29.

Rainfall may prevail in parts of Odisha between September 30 and October 6 due to likely formation of a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal, it added.
