New Delhi: The Election Commission on Tuesday announced the polling dates for the assembly elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand.
Maharashtra will vote in single phase on November 20. Polls in Jharkhand will be conducted in 2 phases on November 13 and 20.
Results for both the states will be announced on November 23, the ECI officials said at a press conference.
The Model Code of Conduct has come into place in the state with the announcement of poll dates.
For Maharashtra, the last date of filling of nomination is October 29. The nominations will be scrutinised on October 30 and withdrawal will be allowed till November 4.
The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly has 288 seats. The term of the assembly ends on November 26.
The Maharashtra Assembly is currently led by the Mahayuti alliance. The alliance is led by the BJP with 102 seats, while NCP has 40 seats. The other parties in the alliance are SHS (38), BVA (3), PHJSP (2), RSP (1), JSS (1), MNS (1) and IND (14). The opposition has 71 MLAs with Congress having 37 and Shiv Sena 16.
Similarly, the current term of the Jharkhand Assembly will come to an end on January 5. In Jharkhand, there are 81 Assembly seats. Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) is eyeing a second term, while the Opposition BJP is seeking a return to power. In the 2019 Assembly elections, the JMM won 30 seats, Congress 16, and the BJP secured 25 seats.
