Balasore: Following heavy rainfall in north coastal Odisha since the last 48 hours, the water level of all major rivers and their tributaries is on the rise in Balasore district.

According to reports, the water level of Jalaka river, flowing through the Basta block in the district has crossed the danger level at Mathani. As against the danger level of 5.5 metre, the floodwater was flowing at a height of 6.20 metre by 11 am.

The floodwater of Jalaka has entered 15 houses of Naranpur village in Udala block. Road communication from Udala to Jayapur and Balasore has been cut off due to overflowing of floodwater on the road at Kainsari.

Besides, road communication to Nilagiri block has been cut off as the floodwater was flowing at a height of about 2 feet on the road at Ajodhya.

Due to heavy rainfall in the upper catchments, two gates each of Kala Dam and Sunei Dam were opened on Friday morning. As a result, the floodwater of Swana river has entered Kaansa and Kulapala village.

On the other hand, the floodwater of the Budhabalanga river has also crossed the danger mark at Baruni bridge. By 11 am, the floodwater was flowing at a height of 7.30 metre against the danger level of 7.21 metres.

The floodwater of Gangahara river has entered the villages of Sirakoili and Gangapura of Remuna block.

If rainfall continues in the upper catchments, some of the panchayats in Basta block like Mathani, Baharda, Sadanandpur, Barunagadia, Chakurai and Routpada are most likely to be affected, reports said.

Apart from Balasore, rainwater has entered several low-lying areas of Mayurbhanj and Bhadrak districts due to heavy rainfall, the reports added.
