Srinagar: Security forces helped avert a major tragedy in Jammu & Kashmir on Tuesday after an improvised explosive device (IED) was detected on the Srinagar-Baramulla national highway and defused in time.
The roadside bomb was spotted during a routine road-opening patrol.
The explosive device was detected in Tappar area of Pattan tehsil around midday by a joint team of 29 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and Pattan police.
As per standard protocol, the area was cordoned off immediately, and nearby residents moved to safer places. Vehicular movement was suspended on both sides of the highway.
A bomb disposal squad rushed to the site and carried out a controlled defusal without any casualty or damage.
Normal traffic was restored on the busy and important highway shortly after the device was neutralised efficiently.
Security forces have tightened vigil along the highway following recovery of the IED.

Baramulla police have registered a case and launched an investigation to identify the perpetrators and their motives, most likely terror-linked given the highway’s strategic importance.
Similar recoveries, including a hideout bust, took place in Pattan some weeks back, with arms and explosives being found.
