Male Tamarin Monkey Dies In Nandankanan
Bhubaneswar: A male Tamarin monkey died at Nandankanan Zoological Park, on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, on Friday.
According to zoo sources, this hipster-mustached monkey was being treated in the quarantine ward of the veterinary unit.
Notably, it had escaped from its enclosure in August last year and was captured by zoo officials five days later.
A pair of Tamarin monkeys, including the male Tamarin, and another pair of Marmoset monkeys were brought to the zoo from Madurai in Tamil Nadu in March 2018.
The squirrel-sized Tamarins are found in southern Central America, northwestern Colombia and the Amazon basin. They appear black, brown and white with moustache-like hairs on their face. They live in groups with life expectancy up to 18 years.
Following the death of this monkey, the zoo is left with only the female Tamarin.
