Kolkata: Expressing concern over the unavailability of gas cylinders, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has called for protest by her party’s women’s wing against the hike in price of cooking gas. She made the call from the dharna stage in Kolkata, where she had been protesting against Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

“Yesterday itself they increased the LPG price by Rs 60, and three days ago it was increased by Rs 59. Then they said that gas must be booked 21 days in advance. But what will people do for 21 days if their gas cylinder finishes?….What will people eat?” she questioned.

“I want to mention that many women voters’ names have been deleted during the SIR process, under the pretext that their surnames changed after marriage. I will urge Chandrima (a Bengal minister) to ask women to organise protest rallies with utensils against the increase in LPG prices….,” she said.

She also urged the protesters to wear black dresses as a symbol of the protest on Sunday. “If there is democracy. Why are you removing names of genuine voters,” she asked while questioning the BJP and the role of Election Commission. She said the Central government was depending on the support from the party of N Chandrababu Naidu (Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh). “If you try to remove genuine voters…we will overthrow your government in Delhi,” she warned.
