Mumbai: Droupadi Murmu may be Head of State of the world’s largest democracy. Nirmala Sitharaman may be handling the finances of the world’s fastest growing major economy and the likes of Manu Bhaker may be making the nation proud by winning Olympic medals. Yet, India’s girl child is still not safe at home.
On Sunday, a 40-year-old resident of Ghatkopar in Mumbai, Maharashtra, was arrested by the Pant Nagar police for murdering his four-month-old daughter. Sanjay Babu Kokare clearly wanted a son instead of a daughter and he did away with the child when her mother was not around.
“We have arrested Kokare on the basis of a complaint lodged by his wife. There are clear ligature marks on the child’s neck region. It seems that Kokare strangled his daughter with a rope from which her baby cradle (Paalna) was hanging. The cradle has been seized and we are awaiting the final post mortem report,” an official of the Pant Nagar police station told the media.
Neighbours told the police that Kokare and his wife would have violent alterations on a regular basis after the birth of their third child. They claimed that the man blamed his wife for not being able to give birth to a boy.
“Though the investigation is still in its nascent stage, we suspect that Kokare was waiting for an opportunity to be alone with the child. On Sunday morning, he got this opportunity after his wife left the house on some work. Though she knew that her husband wasn’t happy with the birth of the girl child, the wife never felt that he would do anything of that nature,” the official said.
The wife returned home to find the child lying still in her cradle. She rushed to a nearby hospital with her, where doctors declared the child dead. The police were informed and the investigation started. Mumbai: Droupadi Murmu may be Head of State of the world’s largest democracy.
