Kendrapada: A man allegedly attacked his wife with a sharp weapon over a family dispute and then attempted suicide by consuming poison in Pattamundai area of Odisha’s Kendrapada district.
The disturbing incident reportedly took place at Malipur village under the jurisdiction of Pattamundai Rural Police station late on Monday night. The man has been identified as Pratap Malik. His wife Bharati was critically injured in the attack. Both are reportedly battling for their lives and undergoing treatment in hospital.
As per preliminary information, the couple had a heated verbal altercation late on Monday night over a family issue, which soon turned violent.
As the argument between the two was underway, Pratap allegedly attacked Bharati with a sharp weapon in a fit of rage, causing her grievous injuries. After the assault, the man reportedly fled the spot.
Hearing the woman’s cries, neighbours rushed to the spot and immediately provided assistance. Bharati was first taken to the community health centre (CHC) at Pattamundai and later referred to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for advanced treatment.
Pratap was spotted lying unconscious near a pond on the outskirts of the village on Tuesday morning. A bottle of poison and a blood-stained sharp weapon were recovered from near him, leading police to suspect an attempted suicide.
Pratap was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital and later shifted to Cuttack as his condition deteriorated.
A case has been registered by the police, while a thorough investigation is underway to ascertain the exact circumstances that led to the violent incident.
