Berhampur: A 35-year-old man died after iron rods pierced into his chest in a ditch dug up at an under-construction site of the Railway Over Bridge (ROB) here on Friday.
According to police, the man identified as Purna Chandra Samantray of Lanjipalli Tota Sahi, an air-conditioner mechanic, was going on his scooter when he slipped into the ditch at Ankuli under BNPur police station. Iron rods in the ditch pierced into his left chest killing him on the spot.
On being informed, IIC of BNPur Sarada Prasanna Das, SDPO of Berhampur Bishnu Prasad Pati and others rushed to the spot. They retrieved the body by cutting the iron rods and sent it for post mortem.
The locals alleged that the spot has turned into a danger zone due to the negligence of the contractor. The construction work of the ROB has been progressing at a snail’s pace. Started in 2013, it is yet to be completed, they said.
