Sambalpur: A man from Odisha’s Sambalpur city has allegedly duped a girl from West Bengal of Rs 64 lakh on pretext of marriage.
The girl, identified as Shoma Ghosh of South Subhash Palli in Hooghly district of Bengal, has filed a complaint at Sambalpur Town police station alleging cheating by Rahul Rakshit of the area in the city.
According to police sources, Shoma, an LIC agent, has stated in her complaint that she came in contact with Rahul through a matrimonial site in 2021. Rahul said he belonged to a rich family and was doing business.
After the two developed a relationship online, Rahul extracted money from Shoma on several occasions on the pretext that he was facing problem in his business. He had assured her of returning the amount after some time.
“Since we were going to get married, I believed Rahul and gave him around Rs 64 lakh in phases through online payment. I had arranged the money from my deposit and borrowed some amount from the relatives,” Shoma told the mediapersons.
Some time back, Rahul started avoiding Shoma and did not respond to her phone calls. He even did not want to marry her and wanted to end their relationship.
Suspecting the intention of Rahul, Shoma landed in Sambalpur and went to meet him in his house on Thursday. But Rahul drove her back and warned of dire consequences if she did not end the relationship, Shoma alleged.
