Angul: A 30-year-old-man has been arrested for allegedly swindling Rs 24,000 from a man on false job promise by impersonating an IPS officer.
The accused has been identified as Biranchi Naik of Kunja village under Khamar police limits.
According to sources, Naik, who is unemployed, used fake police uniforms and ID cards to deceive people. He took Rs 24,000 in two installments from Mantu Sahu, a contractor, last month by promising him a job at Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) in Talcher.
Sahu lodged an FIR at Sadar police station on Sunday as Naik neither provided the job nor refunded the money.
Acting on his complaint, police picked up Naik from his rented house at Panchmahala on Monday for questioning during which confessed to taking money from Sahu. Police uniforms and Rs 50,000 were seized from his possession.
“He has been arrested and will be produced in court today,” said Sadar police station IIC Mrinalo Kalo.
