Man Set Afire By Villagers Over Suspected Sorcery In Odisha’s Nuapada
Nuapada: A man critically injured after villagers allegedly set him on fire over suspected sorcery in Sinapali area of Odisha’s Nuapada district.
As per preliminary information, the shocking incident took place at Portipada village under Sinapali police limits of the district.
Sources said a group of villagers tied the man, identified as Kham Singh Majhi, with ropes and set him on fire. He has sustained grievous burns on his face, limbs, and other parts of the body.
The villagers accused Majhi of practising sorcery and called a meeting in the village where he was threatened with dire consequences. Though he denied the allegation, some villagers attacked him and later set him on fire.
Majhi managed to set him free and ran around the village before jumping into a pond in a bid to save his life. The matter came to the fore after family members rescued him and admitted to a hospital.
Refuting the allegation made by the villagers, the victim’s son said a some people attacked his father set him afire after the meeting was over.
Police said they have received information about the incident and registered a case at Sinapali police station. The injured is currently under treatment and investigation is now in its preliminary stage, police added.
