Bhubaneswar: A 40-year-old man, who had allegedly set himself on fire following a dispute over family property at Balipatna in Khurda district, succumbed to injuries at AIIMS-Bhubaneswar on Saturday.
The deceased, identified as Jyoti Ranjan Mathia, was admitted to the premier hospital with more than 95 per cent burns after self-immolating on Friday.
Sources said Jyoti Ranjan had been demanding his share in family property. However, his father who remarried after the death of his first wife, allegedly transferred a recently purchased property to his second wife and her son, ignoring Jyoti Ranjan’s plea.
Upset over this, Jyoti Ranjan allegedly poured petrol on himself and set on fire at his residence. Locals rushed him to a nearby hospital before he was shifted to the Capital Hospital and later referred to AIIMS-Bhubaneswar.
Meanwhile, Jyoti Ranjan’s wife Bijaylaxmi has filed a complaint at Balipatna police station, alleging that her husband took the extreme step following mental and physical harassment by the family.
Acting on the complaint, police have detained Jyoti Ranjan’s father Surendra Mathia and his son from second wife for questioning, sources said.
