The Taliban had promised peace in Afghanistan after taking over the war-torn country following the withdrawal of US troops. But the militant organization already seems to be breaking its word.

On Thursday, many people were killed after the Taliban opened fired on protesters who were waving the Afghan flag in Asadabad at an Independence Day rally, Reuters reported. A stampede ensued as locals tore white flags of Taliban and flashing the national flag.

“Hundreds of people came out on the streets,” Reuters quoted a witness as saying. “At first I was scared and didn’t want to go, but when I saw one of my neighbours joined, I took out the flag I have at home. Several people were killed and injured in the stampede and firing by the Taliban,” said Mohammed Salim.

The Taliban is yet to comment on the incident.

There have been similar protests in Jalalabad city and Paktia province. There has been no report of serious violence, however.

Afghanistan celebrates independence from British control on August 19 every year.
