Bhubaneswar: The traders association of the Unit-II Market Building in Odisha capital has decided to reopen their shops from Thursday. The Market Building was closed after a dispute between temporary and permanent vendors on Sunday.
The association took the decision after a meeting with the officials of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) in the office of the Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited at Sahed Nagar.
Speaking to media after the meeting, Pradyumna Kumar Jena, president of Market Building Traders’ Association said they decided to reopen the shops after the BMC agreed to their demand that no temporary vendors would be allowed to operate in the Market Building area.
The Municipal authorities have agreed to deploy police in the area to keep watch on temporary vendors and prevent them from setting up the shops, Jena said.
It may be noted that a week after their eviction from the Market Building, the vendors returned and forcibly tried to set up stalls in the area on Sunday. When association members opposed it, they allegedly assaulted them.
On the fateful day, a scuffle had erupted between the two groups as several street vendors attempted to set up stalls in the market while the traders’ association members opposed it. On being informed, a team from Capital police station reached the spot and restored normalcy. But the traders association closed down their shops demanding permanent eviction of temporary vendors.
