Married Woman Commits Suicide After Youth Tonsured By Villagers For ‘Illicit’ Relation In Odisha’s Ganjam

Berhampur: A married woman allegedly committed suicide for having extra-marital relation with a young man after he was tonsured by villagers in Odisha’s Ganjam district.

According to sources, the villagers of Tentuliapalli under Khallikote police station spotted the youth of nearby Bagalpur village going to the woman’s house late Thursday night. Suspecting illicit relationship between them, the villagers went inside the woman’s house and forcibly brought the youth out to the road.

The villagers beat up the youth mercilessly and held a meeting to decide the punishment for him. As per the decision at the meeting, the youth was tonsured and moved around the village with a garland of slippers around his neck.

Later, the woman consumed poison to commit suicide reportedly out of humiliation to the youth. She was rushed to community health centre (CHC) at Khallikote where the doctors declared her brought dead.

On being informed, police went to the village and rescued the youth from the villagers. They have also registered a case in this regard.

The woman has two children while her husband has gone outside the state to work as daily wager, the sources said.
