New Delhi: A massive broke out at a rubber godown in South Delhi’s heavily populated Malviya Nagar, on Tuesday evening. Thick clouds of smoke could be seen rising in the sky from most parts in south-east Delhi after the fire caught a truck inside the rubber factory around 5 pm. It spread to the entire factory, leading to ‘highest category’ fire.
Fire department has sent more than 30 fire engines to the area to bring the situation under control.
One of the officials said reaching the spot was very tough. “The lanes in the area are very narrow and congested,” he added. One fire fighter was injured while putting it off.
Fire department said the fire could lead to severe consequences. “There is a real danger of the fire spreading from the godown factory to other nearby areas. It has already spread to the residential building next to the godown, but it is said to be empty,” he said.
The buildings around the godown have been evacuated and people stopped from going in and around that area. The godown is close to a school, Sant Nirankari Public School, which fortunately was empty when the fire broke out.
No casualties have been reported so far.
The smoke is visible from nearby areas like Saket, Greater Kailash and Nehru Place, around 5 km away.
