Bhubaneswar: Biswajit Das, a native of Berhampur in Odisha’s Ganjam district, is carving a niche in the rapidly growing domain of space technology and human spaceflight design, bringing pride and national recognition to his hometown.
Currently based in Mumbai, Das recently completed an intensive, month-long analog research program at Poland’s LunarAres Research Station as part of the Byom Setu Analog Space Mission. As one of only seven specialists selected nationwide, he underwent hands-on aerospace training simulating extreme off-world environments, satellite development, and the physiological stressors of high-altitude flight and long-duration spaceflight.
Unlike traditional architects who build for terrestrial environments, space architects design habitats tailored specifically to survive extreme cosmic conditions while prioritising astronaut health. “Long-duration space missions have significant impacts on the physical health and mental well-being of astronauts and researchers. Therefore, the focus should be on ensuring their safety, comfort, and functionality while living and working in space environments,” Das said, emphasising that as India gears up for ambitious human space endeavours like ISRO’s Gaganyaan mission, human-centric design must remain the absolute core of structural engineering.
Reflecting on his journey, Das highlighted that the frontier of space technology is deeply multidisciplinary, offering vast opportunities well beyond conventional science and engineering disciplines. He co-founded ARKASA Space Architecture Design Research Labs, which works alongside national space initiatives, to pioneer regenerative off-world habitats and closed-loop ecosystems.
By bridging the gap between architecture, human factors, and aerospace engineering, Das aims to directly support India’s upcoming human spaceflight goals while actively inspiring a new generation of youth from Odisha to pursue emerging careers in space exploration.
