Bhubaneswar: Sambalpur was the hottest place in Odisha at 41 degree Celsius by 11.30 am on Friday, the regional centre of India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed.
Jharsuguda registered 40.6 degree followed by Bhubaneswar and Hirakud at 39.6 degree each. The Odisha capital had recorded 34 degree Celsius and 71% humidity by 8.30 am.
The temperature is likely to shoot up to 44 degree Celsius in Sambalpur with Jharsuguda, Balangir, Sonepur and Titlagarh recording 43 degree Celsius and Bhubaneswar and five other places at 41 degree Celsius, according to a forecast.
Meanwhile, the MeT office has also issued yellow warning for thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph for some parts of Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar districts till 3.20 pm.
The western pockets of the state has been witnessing sweltering heat for past few weeks with the mercury soaring to 42 degree Celsius and more and the IMD has forecast no large change in the day temperature during the next 5 days. Five places had recorded maximum temperature of more than 42 degree Celsius on Thursday with Sambalpur being the hottest at 43.4 degree Celsius by Jharsuguda and Hirakud at 42.6 degree, Sonepur 42.4 degree and Boudh 42.2 degree Celsius. The twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack recorded 39.9 and 38.8 degree Celsius respectively.
