Bhubaneswar: Amid the prevailing hot and humid condition and thunderstorm activities, heatwave may return to Odisha from Saturday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Friday.

The day temperature may also soar by 2-3 degree Celsius at many places in the state during the next 3 days.

According to the weather agency, hot & humid weather condition may continue at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati districts till June 11.

Yellow warning of thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty surface windspeed reaching 30-40 kmph has also been issued one or two places in Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nawarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Balasore, and Bhadrak on June 7.

On June 8, heatwave is likely to prevail in Bargarh, Balangir, and Nuapada districts. Thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty surface windspeed reaching 30-40 kmph may occur at one or two places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Sundargarh, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Angul, and Dhenkanal.

Heatwave warning continues for one or two places in Bargarh, Balangir, Nuapada, Sonepur, and Boudh during the subsequent 24 hours. Thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty surface windspeed reaching 30-40 kmph is also likely at one or two places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Nayagarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, and Sundargarh districts.

On June 10-11, heatwave condition may prevail at one or two places in Bargarh, Sonepur, Boudh, Sambalpur and Jharsuguda.

Thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty surface windspeed reaching 30-40 kmph is likely at one or two places in Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, and Dhenkanal on June 10, and in Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Mayurbhanj, and Keonjhar districts on June 11.

The IMD further said that the southwest monsoon may arrive in South Odisha during next 3-4 days.

The Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC) of Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan (SOA) has also forecast the onset of monsoon over Odisha by June 10 due to the south-westerly wind flow from the Arabian Sea. “Due to south-westerly wind flow from Arabian sea, monsoon current may advance into some parts of Maharashtra and Telangana by June 9 or 10. The same current may push the monsoon into the extreme southern districts of Odisha by June 10,” said CEC director Sarat Chandra Sahu.

“Warm humid weather with temperature (less than 42 degrees C) in the interior districts of Odisha and moderate temperature (less than 40 degrees C) in the coastal region will prevail till June 10. If the onset of monsoon is delayed, day temperature could reach 45 degrees C in the western Odisha districts and 40 degrees C in the southern districts between June 12 and 16. Sporadic norwester (Kalabaisakhi) is likely to continue in different parts of the state during the period but its frequency could be more in the coastal belt,” he added.
